X-rays may be recommended after an examination identifies an injury or concern requiring a closer look. The body area and number of views depend on what the doctor needs to evaluate.
Limping or difficulty bearing weight
A suspected fracture or joint injury
Persistent coughing or suspected chest disease
Vomiting or a suspected swallowed object
Abdominal discomfort or suspected bladder stones
Planning an orthopedic procedure
Checking healing after a fracture or surgery
Seek immediate veterinary attention for breathing difficulty, major trauma or severe pain rather than waiting for a routine imaging appointment.
X-rays show bone structure, alignment and changes around joints. They may help identify fractures, dislocations, arthritis or other abnormalities contributing to pain and reduced mobility.
Ligaments and other soft tissues are not shown in the same detail. The doctor combines the images with the orthopedic examination and may recommend additional testing.
Fractures and bone alignment
Joint changes and signs of arthritis
Orthopedic planning and healing checks
Chest X-rays provide an overview of the lungs, heart outline and surrounding structures. They may help investigate persistent coughing, changes in breathing or abnormalities found during an examination.
An enlarged heart outline or an unusual lung pattern does not explain every aspect of the problem. Additional testing may be needed to clarify the findings..
Lung and airway changes
Heart size and shape
Fluid or other abnormalities within the chest
Abdominal X-rays help assess organ outlines, intestinal gas patterns and certain stones or swallowed objects. They may provide useful clues when a pet has vomiting, abdominal discomfort or urinary concerns.
Not every object or obstruction is visible on an X-ray. Ultrasound or other testing may be recommended when the initial images do not answer the clinical question.
Abnormal intestinal gas patterns
Some swallowed objects and urinary stones
Changes in organ size or position
